The Sanitation Problem

Solving a major problem of our country

Sanitation is a distressing problem in India, especially in the rural regions. The biggest setback related to sanitation is the lack of access to adequate sanitation facilities, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas where open defecation is widespread and access to sewage systems is restricted. In India, 750 million people, or 60% of the country’s total population, do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities.

Open defecation is, as a result a widespread phenomenon across the country, which has serious long-term consequences for health and wellbeing. In India, each year, 300,000 people die from diarrhoea and related diseases. Poor sanitation makes a significant contribution to this disease burden. Children under the age of five are the worst affected. Repeated diarrheal episodes also lead to malnutrition, and India is home to millions of chronically malnourished children.

Without access to proper sanitation facilities, women and girls face a loss of privacy and dignity and are also exposed to serious risks of sexual and physical violence.

Given such challenges, there is a need for an improved on-site sanitation solution like Tiger Toilet.

The Tiger Toilet reduces the frequency of emptying of latrines, makes waste disposal a safer activity, and provides an affordable and hygienic product for low-income populations.
