The Tiger Toilet was first developed through the Sanitation Ventures project at The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The first working prototype was built in 2012 in the UK at the Centre for Alternative Technology.
Subsequently, with funding support from USAID, field testing was carried out in India, Uganda and Myanmar, in a partnership between Bear Valley Ventures and PriMove, Water for People, and Oxfam respectively.

Starting in 2014, a commercial prototype was developed and deployed in villages near Pune, Maharashtra, India (collaboration with PriMove Infrastructure Development Consultants, Oxfam and Water for People), through a grant from Grand Challenges Canada. About 500 units were sold and installed in 2014, the first year of sales.

In September 2015, a commercial pilot got underway in rural India in collaboration with PriMove Infrastructure Development Consultants.
